Do you know how many times I’ve written that a beer or hard seltzer is “light”, “crushable”, or “sessionable”? A ton.

The low calorie beer and hard seltzer markets are to blame, especially with their exploding sales and variations. It’s time for all of those beverages to move over. A new champion is in town – Bella Snow.

Not only is Bella Snow a champion of light, crushable, and sessionable beer, it’s also a trend setter with a new beer style, the Soft Ale. According to Bella Snow, a Soft Ale “is a low-alcohol, low-calorie beer” and is “brewed for those choosing to take a walk on the lighter side.” With “brewed to have a few” as it’s tagline, Bella Snow’s Soft Ale is 77 calories and a very low 2.4% ABV! It is also Gluten-Free thanks to an enzyme that “eats up all the gluten” after traditional brewing.

Bella Snow has two versions of its Soft Ale with grapefruit and mandarin. Both were infused into their respective Soft Ales and were extremely flavorful! I was worried that this light beer was going to give me the low ABV and calories, which are more and more sought after in the craft beverage world, but skimp on the flavor. I was very wrong. Bella Snow delivered in the flavor department. Mandarin was my favorite out of the two.

I’m curious how the Soft Ale market will develop and morph as time goes on. For now, let’s enjoy Bella Snow’s entrance into craft beer and toast to them as they innovate both their beer, brand, and the market’s take on what light beer can and should be.

Cheers!

Ed Norton

Edwin "Ed" Norton was first introduced to craft beer when his designated fraternity Big Brother Vince asked him if he knew anything about the topic. Ed admitted his ignorance and the rest is history as Ed and Vince would split six-packs of craft beers each week during Ed's probationary status. Ed is now a craft beer enthusiast who is always on the lookout for a beer he has not tried when bottle shopping or drinking at breweries and bars. In addition to drinking beer, this livelong Michigan resident enjoys a bunch of hobbies that he doubts you really care about, other than drinking beer and sounding off about it.
