December is the prime time to get your hands on holiday-related beers. Christmas Ales are abundant and easy to grab most places. The special beers that breweries put out for a limited time are the fun ones to get your hands on. BAD Brewing Company recently did that with Booker’s BBA Xmas Cookies.

I was a little overdue in my recent visit to BAD Brewing Company. I missed Booker’s BBA Xmas Cookies on draft and was a little late in picking up my Greater Lansing Beer Trail prize from September’s adventures. Thankfully, the brewery still had the beer in cans, so I left with one and Das Boot!

Booker’s BBA Xmas Cookies is the barrel aged version of Ho Ho Holy Crap Christmas Ale. I’ve enjoyed this Christmas Ale before; it is a solid Winter Warmer that is packed with ginger and a malty backbone. It clocks in at 8.5% and really warms you up. BAD Brewing Company is well-known for their barrel aged beers, especially with their annual Bourrrbon Barrel Aged Winterfest. I knew I was in for a treat, especially as it is the week before Christmas.

When I opened the can, I was greeted with a ton of ginger! When I went for my first sip, I was, again, met with ginger. The initial tasting notes were full of … yes, ginger! I’m not saying that this beer was a ginger bomb. I’m just saying that the ginger prevailed!

Booker’s BBA Xmas Cookie was conditioned on cinnamon, vanilla, and ginger snaps. There was also a more boozy element than the Ho Ho Holy Crap Christmas Ale. That boozy element was from the year the beer was kept in a Booker’s barrel. The mouthfeel and finish were super smooth thanks to the vanilla.

Similar to my recent beer review of Draught Horse Brewery’s Nutella Stout, I appreciate the simplicity of the beer label on the can. The uniform BAD Brewing Company can wrap looks sharp on all of the cans that the brewery uses. The unique sticker is simple, easy to read, and allows for the brewery to save on costs for each batch and brew canned.

Overall, this was an excellent holiday-related beer from BAD Brewing Company in Mason. The holiday season is just about over, but their boozy concoctions will be on full display at their upcoming Bourrrbon Barrel Aged Winterfest on Saturday, January 28, 2023. More information can be found here.

Cheers!

Ed Norton

Edwin "Ed" Norton was first introduced to craft beer when his designated fraternity Big Brother Vince asked him if he knew anything about the topic. Ed admitted his ignorance and the rest is history as Ed and Vince would split six-packs of craft beers each week during Ed's probationary status. Ed is now a craft beer enthusiast who is always on the lookout for a beer he has not tried when bottle shopping or drinking at breweries and bars. In addition to drinking beer, this livelong Michigan resident enjoys a bunch of hobbies that he doubts you really care about, other than drinking beer and sounding off about it.
