FOMO has plagued craft beer community, especially in Michigan.

Everyone is fearful of missing out on the next best “exclusive” beer that is hitting the market.

Breweries are putting themselves out there and stretching themselves thin to consistently make something new that is going to become the next best thing for people to drink and enjoy.

When is this going to end? How are we going to bring ourselves back to Earth?

James Beard nominee and writer, Stephen Beaumont was recently mulling with these ideas and questions and came up with an alliterative saying for the second month of the year – Flagship February.

In a series of tweets, Beaumont said that Flagship February would be focused on “drinking faves from the early years, not necessarily exclusively, but frequently” to boost the brands that gave the craft beer drinkers a foundation.

Flagship February is what is going to guide us down to where we started when we entered the craft beer industry.

We at Better on Draft have created and are continuing to update a collection of the flagship beers from Michigan breweries (meaderies and cideries) for Flagship February.

Each brewery has provided us with one to three of what they consider to be their Flagship beers. We wanted this to be decided by them, which is in the true spirit of Flagship February – it’s about what was flowing from the taps when the doors opened, the beer that saved a brewery from closing their doors, and/or what shocked the beer community enough to make it a staple in the state of Michigan.

We envision this to be a reminder and, perhaps, a re-introduction to the craft beer community what beer(s) got each Michigan brewery to where they are today both to celebrate Flagship February and to be a go-to guide of the mainstays when visiting a new place or an old favorite the rest of the year.

Check out our beer map of Michigan breweries, as well, to make a day out of your beer adventures.

Work at a brewery and notice something is incorrect or missing or your place isn’t on the list? Have your people contact me* to have it be updated as soon as possible.

Cheers to MI Flagship beers!

Ed Norton

Edwin "Ed" Norton was first introduced to craft beer when his designated fraternity Big Brother Vince asked him if he knew anything about the topic. Ed admitted his ignorance and the rest is history as Ed and Vince would split six-packs of craft beers each week during Ed's probationary status. Ed is now a craft beer enthusiast who is always on the lookout for a beer he has not tried when bottle shopping or drinking at breweries and bars. In addition to drinking beer, this livelong Michigan resident enjoys a bunch of hobbies that he doubts you really care about, other than drinking beer and sounding off about it.
