While breweries seem to be struggling and closing up shop across Michigan, the B.O.B. is reopening today after being closed for almost nine months and being up for sale. The B.O.B. houses B.O.B.’s Brewery that we at Better on Draft have enjoyed visiting in downtown Grand Rapids over the years.

The Big Old Building located in downtown Grand Rapids will open its doors at 4 pm today and have live entertainment from 9 pm to 1 am. More information can be found on the Instagram post below from @bigoldbuilding.

WOOD TV out of Grand Rapids has been a good go to for coverage of the closing and now reopening of the building. When it was announced at the end of 2021 that the B.O.B. was closing, including the brewery we knew that a fun brewery and event space in Grand Rapids would be missed. The most recent coverage mentioned that the brewery will be reopening with an expansion.

With the recent announcements of Osgood Brewing and Barn Brewers Brewery closing, we took a glance at brewing production from 2021 and listed similar sized breweries to show an understanding of size of the brewery that was being lost. With this brewery coming back online, we were curious about how B.O.B.’s Brewery stacked up with similar sized breweries and production. According to the 2021 Brewery Production Numbers for Michigan, B.O.B.’s Brewery produced 150 barrels of beer. In comparison, there were eight other breweries that produced 150 barrels in 2021:

  • 5 Lakes Brew Pub (Byron Center)
  • Biere de Mac Brew Works (Mackinaw City)
  • Big Rock Chophouse and Brewery (Birmingham) – CLOSED December 31, 2021
  • GravCap Brewing (Oxford)
  • Jasper Ridge Brewery (Ishpeming)
  • Lake Superior Brewing Company (Lake Marais)
  • Mothfire Brewing Co (Ann Arbor)
  • Sawyers Brewing Company (Montague)

The party doesn’t end with the Grand Reopening tonight. Grand Rapids Beer Tours will be heading to B.O.B.’s Brewery on their Downtown Walking Tour from noon to 3 pm on Saturday, September 10. Check out their website for more information.

We’re looking forward to welcoming a brewery back to Michigan and Beer City USA!

Ed Norton

Edwin "Ed" Norton was first introduced to craft beer when his designated fraternity Big Brother Vince asked him if he knew anything about the topic. Ed admitted his ignorance and the rest is history as Ed and Vince would split six-packs of craft beers each week during Ed's probationary status. Ed is now a craft beer enthusiast who is always on the lookout for a beer he has not tried when bottle shopping or drinking at breweries and bars. In addition to drinking beer, this livelong Michigan resident enjoys a bunch of hobbies that he doubts you really care about, other than drinking beer and sounding off about it.
