This past weekend I found myself in the middle of Detroit thirsty for craft beer. After attending the Third Annual Brew & Fall Fest in Utica, which was co-sponsored by Better on Draft, a few weekends ago, I have a list of breweries to check out. First on the list – Eastern Market Brewing Company (EMBC).

After grabbing a slice of pizza from Supino Pizzeria, I was pumped to see advertising all over the Eastern Market grounds for this coming weekend’s Michigan Brewers Guild Detroit Fall Beer Festival.

I headed over to EMBC and stumbled upon the brewery’s first birthday party! This was an unexpected, but exciting surprise!

The communal picnic tables were jam packed as people kept filing in with their take out from Supino’s or EMBC’s food truck, The Elephant Shack.

People were talking, laughing, and playing an ample amount of board games I had heard of like Connect Four and Battleship, and other games I had not heard of like one based on The Goonies and various card games. After grabbing a few beers from the staple beer menu, we settled in with our pizza and conversation.

The night seemed to go off without a hitch! Music throughout the night was provided by Mike Ward, Lady Fantastic, and DJ Thornstryker. New beers were released every hour beginning at 6 pm and EMBC founder, Dayne Bartscht, gave a toast at 10 pm.

The best beer of the night belongs to the 7 pm release of the White Stout. It’s amber color fools the amateur beer drinker into thinking it’s not a stout, but it is – a white stout! It was smooth and creamy and had a strong coffee and white mocha taste throughout. I will be coming back for more of this!

The most interesting beer I have ever had was also experienced on Saturday night – Lunar Spritz. Why was it so interesting? Well, it is a a New England IPA made with a ton of hops; orange zest, lime zest, and lemon zest; along with, 120 liters of de-carbonated Faygo Moon Mist. What?!

If you’re heading to the Detroit Fall Beer Festival on either Friday, October 26 and/or Saturday, October 27, Eastern Market Brewing Company is going to be the closest brewery to the festival, so head on over there and check it out!

Happy 1st Birthday, EMBC! We wish you many more!

Cheers!

Ed Norton

Edwin "Ed" Norton was first introduced to craft beer when his designated fraternity Big Brother Vince asked him if he knew anything about the topic. Ed admitted his ignorance and the rest is history as Ed and Vince would split six-packs of craft beers each week during Ed's probationary status. Ed is now a craft beer enthusiast who is always on the lookout for a beer he has not tried when bottle shopping or drinking at breweries and bars. In addition to drinking beer, this livelong Michigan resident enjoys a bunch of hobbies that he doubts you really care about, other than drinking beer and sounding off about it.
