In a rare burst of patriotism, I decided to take a trip to Michigan’s state capital over Independence Day weekend. It had been years since I’d visited Lansing. There were also plenty of breweries in and around the city that I had never sampled, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to try out some new-to-me beers. Midtown Brewing Co came highly recommended, and I couldn’t wait to check it out.

The brewery was lovely inside. There was a huge outdoor tented patio on the street side and excellent treats from the kitchen. A couple of blocks away is the State Capitol Building, and I’m sure the brewery sees lots of business from that direction. The first thing I noticed upon entering Midtown Brewing Co was just how many taps there were — and not all of them their own! Midtown Brewing Co had their own in-house beer available, along with other local, Michigan brews. I decided to go with a flight, so I could have a taste of everything Midtown brewed.
I filled five of the seven flight spots, but I could not have been happier with my choices. A few selections were within my comfort zone with the Marathon Gold Ale, Nugget IPA, and Cream Ale. I branched out with the Strawberry Hibiscus Ale and the Plaid Penguin Scotch Ale. Plot twist! Those last two were my absolute favorites!
The Strawberry Hibiscus Ale was unbelievably delicious and easy drinking. It wasn’t overly sweet and had a light, fruity berry taste that I couldn’t get enough of.
I was even more surprised by the Scotch Ale, though. I have stayed away from maltier beers, and even though I know there’s no actual Scotch in these, my untrained brain always insists there is and I find them too strong. Midtown Brewing Co’s Scotch Ale changed my mind. It was malty, sure, but so rich. It was nearly chocolate in flavor and had a deliciously smooth mouthfeel.
I was impressed with Midtown Brewing Co’s own beers, and their staff were amazing, as well. They handled a mid afternoon flight rush with grace and humor. They were attentive and friendly during my entire visit. I would absolutely recommend Midtown Brewing Co to anyone visiting Lansing! I can’t wait to get back there myself! Their own beer and friendly staff are worth the visit.
