Recently, I had an usual and violent urge to drink a whole lot of alcohol. I can’t imagine what may have occurred recently to spur such a reaction but stranger things have happened I suppose. One bomber of Pumpking by Southern Tier Brewing later, I was feeling pretty good.

This is not the most beautiful beer I’ve ever seen but oh man I could write a long and heartfelt sonnet about how this beer smells. It’s like falling into a pumpkin pie that your grandmother made with every ounce of love she could muster. You can even smell the pipping hot crust and the whipped cream. If you love pumpkin pie, I would advise trying this beer just to soak in the amazing aroma.
I am so sorry to report that the taste does not live up to the smell. I think it would incredibly difficult to do so but I can’t help but feel a little sad. It’s not a terrible beer, in fact it has a nice and full spicy taste. It’s very filling, I almost felt like chewing it. It has a nice pumpkin taste which I feel like a lot of pumpkin beers lack and it is also a bit on the sweeter side which I can also appreciate. However, it is very alcohol forward which is very disappointing, especially since I’ve had beers with a higher ABV that are less biting. This is a very solid choice for a holiday beer and it’s very close to being great.

This is definitely a beer I can vote for and you would not be incorrect to elect to have it in your fridge. Excuse me while I drink more.
