Whenever a buddy says, “I’ll show you around my stomping grounds and all the breweries in the area,” take them up on the offer. I recently took Matt Bush, former Better on Draft co-host, up on the offer, and had a great time touring St. Clair Shores.

St Clair Shores has blossomed into brewery honey hole with Jamex Brewing Co, Baffin Brewing Company, Copper Hop Brewing Co, and Dragon’s Landing, Dragonmead‘s secondary location. All four locations were visited during our tour and all of them had something special to offer.

Our final brewery stop of the night was at Copper Hop Brewing Company. The open-aired taproom and patio were abuzz with people abiding by social distancing rules in our global pandemic world. We found a place to sit and I ordered a flight of “the best beers you have.” Our server, Mackenzie, delivered a solid flight of beers.

Mackenzie told us that her pride and joy, a cream ale with ginger was due to be on tap the following week. It turns out Mackinzie was also the newly hired assistant brewer at Copper Hop. The new beer would be her first brew in St. Clair Shores. The following week I snagged a 25 oz can to review the beer, Old Old Wooden Ship.

In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with an Anchorman reference. You also can’t go wrong with a cream ale. Old Old Wooden Ship is a cream ale with ginger added. Mackenzie said she wanted to make a “very easy drinking beer that was approachable.” She said that usually when people see the word “ginger” in a beer they get worried it’s going to be a ginger bomb. Her intentions with the ginger were to make it present but in a subtle way.

I thoroughly enjoyed the beer. The ginger paired well with the light cream ale. It added a crispy and sharp crack to an already light and crisp style of beer. It was an excellent beer to enjoy on one of the last few summer weekend nights in September.

After drinking this beer and the stellar flight I had during my visit, there are more visits to Copper Hop Brewing Co in my future. I’m looking forward to my next visit to Copper Hop Brewing Co on the corner of Nine Mile and Greater Mack Ave in St Clair Shores.

Cheers!

Ed Norton

Edwin "Ed" Norton was first introduced to craft beer when his designated fraternity Big Brother Vince asked him if he knew anything about the topic. Ed admitted his ignorance and the rest is history as Ed and Vince would split six-packs of craft beers each week during Ed's probationary status. Ed is now a craft beer enthusiast who is always on the lookout for a beer he has not tried when bottle shopping or drinking at breweries and bars. In addition to drinking beer, this livelong Michigan resident enjoys a bunch of hobbies that he doubts you really care about, other than drinking beer and sounding off about it.
