Well since today is the day that I turn 40 years old, I decided we should celebrate it with a brewery review from a place that I went to for the very first time on my birthday.

1984 was quite a while ago. The Summer Olympics started on my birthday, July 28th in Los Angeles, California. Ronald Reagan was elected to a second term as president. Our Detroit Tigers were well into one of the greatest seasons in baseball history, which we capped off with our last World Series Title (I am still waiting for one that I can actually remember). Hair Metal ruled the radio airwaves and MTV.

In the beer world Boston Beer Company opened, and Bell’s Brewing Company was still a year away from opening. While all of this was going on, the beer world was changing, they just didn’t know it yet. But at 7:39 p.m. on July 28th, 1984, a beer fan of epic proportions would take his first breaths on his own, and begin his lifelong journey to find the perfect beer. Some rumors say that instead of hair on my head, I had a beer dispensing plastic helmet on. I think those are just tall tales made up over the years, but I can’t say for sure.

We are going to wind the clock back to my 36th birthday in 2020, and my first visit to Tecumseh Brewing Company. I have been back a few times since but my inaugural trip was made four years ago today.

The story behind the trip is actually very memorable also. We had just gone on our first post-lockdown brewery trip where we hit 18 breweries in four days all up and down the coast of Lake Michigan. We had started as far North as Frankfort and went all the way South to South Haven and hit everywhere in between.

On the day of my birthday our car rental from the trip was due back by 1:30 in the afternoon, but I wasn’t quite ready to call it an end to the beer trip. I woke up at 9 am on my birthday to drive to Tecumseh so that I could be there in time for them to open at 11 am, grab a beer or two, and drive back to Plymouth in order to return the car rental on time. Which was a very tight schedule but I was able to pull it off.

Tecumseh Brewing Company is right in downtown, you guessed it, Chicago, Illinois. Sorry, I am pulling your leg, it is in Tecumseh, Michigan. Tecumseh Brewing Company was opened in 2015 and has been a pillar of their community ever since.

The brewery itself has quite a bit of seating throughout the place, a lot of room to stretch out if you feel inclined to do so. The bar has about 10 to 15 seats at it. On this trip I wasn’t able to sit at the bar because well 2020 happened. I have been back since and have been able to sit at the bar on other journeys here. They do have an outdoor seating area, which is where I sat on the trip in 2020. Tecumseh Brewing Company also has a kitchen. I ordered chicken wings for lunch while I was there, which come with your choice of sauces. I ended up just getting plain chicken wings and ordering all the sauces on the side because like beer, when it comes to chicken wing sauces, I am on a quest to try them all.

They offer quite a few different options for beer, they usually offer a few IPAs, sours, lagers, porters, stouts, and a few different European style beers. In addition to their beers they usually have a cider or two on tap, and a selection of a few wines. The beers are top notch, I really enjoyed both the Hayden’s Hefeweizen and The Resurrection Stout. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed them so much that I brought a growler of each home with me, and have gotten those growlers filled a couple of times since the inaugural trip to Tecumseh Brewing in 2020.

The staff has also been very friendly and accommodating every time that I have decided to go and swing by Tecumseh Brewing Company. They also host a variety of events including but not limited to live music and trivia.

So next time you are cruising down US-12 and looking for a place to take a load off and enjoy a great beer, and great food with some great people in beautiful, historic downtown Tecumseh, stop by Tecumseh Brewing Company, they will have exactly what the doctor ordered.
