Yay! I got to visit a new brewery this Wednesday. I ventured out to Troy, Michigan to check out Stumblebum Beer Company. They have been open just over 2 months now, and they are brewing some very delicious beer out of their location. (Apparently they opened before July 1st, but they weren’t showing up on my Michigan Brewery Map App until after July 1st, or I definitely would have hit them earlier)
I was prompted to come out and visit the brewery by the man who helped design the brewery, Harold Remlinger, and he has made a living out of designing breweries. He has well over 20 brewery designs under his belt including places like Draught Horse Brewing, Cheboygan Brewing, Heights Brewing and many more in addition to Stumblebum. I would like to thank Harold for inviting me out to check out the place, chatting with you was a real pleasure. Maybe we can do it again sometime in the future.
I also met the owner Eli, who used to run the homebrew supply shop attached to Cadillac Straits Brewing Company, which ironically enough is called The Supply House at Cadillac Straits. I met his head bartender/manager Steck, who used to also work with him at Cadillac Straits. I would tell you Steck’s real name but I don’t think he would like that very much and since I like him, his secret is safe with me. Another person I met was the brewer Chris, who used to work at Batch Brewing Company, and was an ex co-brewer with Doug, our brewer at The Bearded Lamb. Every single one of these guys were awesome people, and you should stop in and check the place out based on that alone.
The brewery itself is located off of Maple Road, right across the street from the Troy Motor Mall. Inside the brewery you will find plenty of seating options available. They have quite a few tables located throughout the place for you and your friends to enjoy a couple of beers at. Stumblebum Brewing Company also offers a nice, long bar for you to enjoy your beverages at. The bar seats approximately 20 to 25 people.
Stumblebum offers a kitchen with a menu of appetizers and pretty light fare, mainly some sandwiches and charcuterie boards. I did not order food while I was there, but that is because I already had dinner plans for the evening. But they did offer flights of fries, which someone sitting near me ordered. It was a very interesting and different concept, but I have never had a batch of fries that made my mouth water just by smelling them until today. I will definitely check out a flight of fries next time I stop by (very soon hopefully).
Now when it comes to the beer, I ended up trying basically everything that they had on the menu at the time of my visit (and a few that hadn’t quite made it to the taps yet). Everything was absolutely wonderful, Chris is doing a great job with the beers here. Some of the beers I tried were their Kolsch, West Coast IPA, German Pilsner, Mocha Porter, Berliner Weisee, Hazy IPA, and the Pale Ale. They were all fantastic, all got a rating of 4 or above from me.
Picking a favorite here was like splitting hairs, all of the beers had a chance at being the best one I tried here. But for the best one, I have to go with the Witbier. It was a light-bodied, clean, smooth beer with just enough of a bite from the clove, coriander and citrus that it went down very easily, dangerously easy as a matter of fact. Luckily it clocks in at 5.4% ABV so being able to enjoy a few in one sitting is definitely not outside the realm of possibility. I will be visiting again just to get some more of this beer, and all of their beer in the near future.
When you are out bumming around in the Troy area and looking for a great brewery to stumble into, check out Stumblebum Brewing Company. Everything about this place is absolutely awesome, the people, the beer, the good times. So what are you waiting for? Check out Stumblebum as soon as possible. Cheers!
