The other brewery that I visited that just recently opened was SaltRock Brewing Company located in Lansing, Michigan. They just opened on July 19th, so they had only been open 2 weeks when I visited them. They are located just a few blocks West of the capitol building in Downtown Lansing.
Salt Rock Brewing Company has more of an upscale feel to it than most breweries. They have a kitchen and a full menu. They offer sandwiches and burgers, all right around 20 dollars apiece, and main entrees that range from Mesquite Grilled Chicken (22 dollars), all the way up to a 32 oz. Tomahawk Ribeye (85 dollars). So they do have a little bit of something for everyone, but sitting down for a meal might get unexpectedly expensive compared to most other breweries.
There are approximately 20 or so tables throughout the brewery, and maybe another 5 to 10 seats at the bar. I am not sure if there is any seating available outside, it was raining while we were there, so no one was seated outside during our visit.
When it comes to the beer, they only had two beers on tap while we were there. So we got one of each beer instead of our usual flight. The two beers we got were a Hefeweizen and a Brown Ale. The Brown Ale was a little under-carbonated at the time we were there but it had a very nice flavor to it. The Hefeweizen was a little too wheat heavy for my taste, and it drowned out any taste of banana or clove that you normally taste in a Hefeweizen and it was nearly as cloudy or murky as a Hazy IPA.
I would be very interested in checking this place out again once they get a few more beers on tap and get to know their system a little better. Since they were only two weeks old when I visited, they are probably going to get much better as they go along. I will always give a brewery more than one shot, especially when I go in when they are this new (I will also update the review, or do a whole new review after another visit).
Next time you are up visiting our State’s Capital and are looking for a new brewery to check out, drive on over and check out Salt Rock Brewing Company.
