One of my favorite places to stop in all of Michigan for a beer is located in Holland, Michigan. The brewery that I will be talking about in today’s post is Our Brewing Company. The brewery opened in 2012 and has been putting out top shelf products from the very beginning.
This is another brewery that made my list of top 25 breweries in the state of Michigan, and to be honest if I narrowed it down to a top 5 list, there is a really good chance they would make that list also. It made the list for the innovative recipes they come up with, the mustache theme is amazing, the atmosphere is second to none, and just the overall quirkiness (I own socks from Our Brewing Company, how many other breweries sell socks with their logo on them?), of the brewery make this place a must stop on your travels.
Our Brewing Company is a nano-brewery that keeps things small on purpose. They focus on making drinks and beer for the people of their community, and they do a great job of it. This is one of the more welcoming breweries you will walk into in the entire State of Michigan. When a beer lover walks in the door, Our Brewing Company feels like home. I usually drop my keys and phone on the bar and say, “Honey I’m home” everytime I walk in the bar, no matter who is working the bar.
Like I said earlier they keep things small, the taproom is no exception. There are maybe a dozen or so tables scattered throughout the taproom, a couple of couches for communal seating and game playing. The bar itself is a decent sized bar that seats approximately 10 to 15 people at it. Other seating options include a front patio area that is a little bit of a smaller seating area, and a back patio where there are quite a few more tables than the front patio. The patios are dog friendly. Our Brewing Company is also a 21 and over establishment after 7 pm.
Our Brewing Company is also home to various events throughout the year including but not limited to live music, trivia, and they even occasionally will have impromptu thrift stores pop up inside the brewery. They also have quite a few board games lying around for your enjoyment.
According to their website they focus on their drinks and leave the food to you. So there is no kitchen here at Our Brewing Company, but outside food is always welcome on your visit. Once in a while they will also get food trucks and or food stands to serve up some food for you. Check their website or socials for food options on your visit.
Options other than beer include Wine, Ciders, And Cocktails. Non-alcoholic options include Kombucha and Mocktails. They distill their own liquor also, all the reviews of the brewery say that their Bourbon is some of the best you can find in Michigan. I don’t drink liquor anymore, but I used to enjoy Bourbon a lot. If they have some next time I am in town visiting, I might have to give it a try myself. I guarantee that it is outstanding if it is anywhere near as good as their beer, and it probably is that delicious.
The main event of the post is upon us, now we get to talk about the beer. Like I said, I stop by Our Brewing every time I am in the area because the beer is just that damn tasty. I’m usually armed with a few growlers during my visit to take Our Brewing Company beer home with me. They rotate their beers very frequently here, so some of these may or may not be on tap during your visit. Some of my favorites over the years have included King Biscuit- Table Beer, Battle Axe- Wee Heavy, Dunkelweiss- Dunkelweizen, Panthor Porter, Blueberry Lime Gose, Holland Oats- Oatmeal Stout, and many others.
My all time favorite from here is the E(Extra) S(Super) B(Badass), which as you might have deduced, is an English Style Bitter. This beer has a bit more of a bitter characteristic than most bitters you will encounter, it makes it quite a bit more of a full body beer. It is rounded out with some malty, nutty goodness and just a little bit of almost a citrus flavor on the end. It creates one of the best flavor profiles I have ever come across in an English Bitter. Highly recommend this if it is on tap, my wallet on the other hand hates when this beer is on tap on my visits (But I don’t really care too much about his opinion).
When you are visiting Holland, whether it is for the tulip festival or just a summer getaway, make a trip over to Our Brewing Company. It is one of the breweries in Michigan that will make you feel like you are in your own hometown watering hole, no matter where you come from. Prost!
