Today’s post takes us to a brewery in Ann Arbor that has been making fantastic beers and expanding at a rapid pace. They have quickly established themselves as a major player in Michigan’s craft beer scene. The brewery that I am talking about is Mothfire Brewing Company. They opened in 2020 as a smaller operation, but by 2023 they had moved into a brand new state of the art brewing facility with 6,000 square feet to perfect their craft in. This is another brewery that made my list of the top 25 breweries in all of Michigan.
When it comes to the new facility, it is located South of I-94 and the University of Michigan campus, and it boasts a capacity of 40 inside the building. There is a bar area with the ability to seat approximately 10 or so parched beer drinkers at, and another 10 to 15 tables scattered around the inside to enjoy your food and beverages with fellow beer geeks and friends. Where they really shine though is their spacious outdoor patio that has a capacity of 70, which gives you ample room to enjoy your beer and some beautiful sunshine while taking in the hustle and bustle that Ann Arbor has to offer. The brewery is both dog and child friendly, so bring your pooches and little ones with you, they are always welcome.
As far as food options are concerned at Mothfire, they do not have a kitchen in the brewery itself. They do have a constant rotating line-up of food trucks that visit the brewery quite often though. Some of the options of food trucks that they offer include wood fired pizza, tacos, sausage trucks and many more. Sometimes they might even have multiple food trucks at the brewery on the same day. Check their socials to see what the food truck options will be during your next visit. If none of their food truck options sound good to you, you are always welcome to bring in other outside food with you during your beer drinking extravaganza.
Mothfire is home to various events throughout the different seasons. They offer live music on occasion, they also do various beer related events such as Oktoberfest. As a matter of a fact this year was the first Oktoberfest they have hosted. I could not find any information during my research for this post that indicates whether or not they rent their space out for private events, so check with the brewery if hosting a private event at Mothfire is something you are interested in doing.
Are you looking for options for the non-beer drinker in your group? Mothfire offers Hard seltzer cocktails, and various different mocktails. If you are visiting with your kids or a friend who abstains from alcohol, Mothfire does have a few non-alcoholic options for their drinking pleasure.
Disclaimer for their beer, I have never had anything that I would call less than stellar from Mothfire, it has all been delicious upon every visit I have made. They do specialize in Hazy IPAs and Fruited Sours, but even the options that don’t fit into these categories are nothing short of spectacular. Some of the beers that I have tried on my visits to Mothfire include Lolo- IPA, Simi- Hazy IPA, Batch M- Double Hazy IPA, Maci- IPA, Times- Kolsch, Onyx Mist- Berliner Weisse, How May Skulls- Imperial Stout, Pyra- Hazy IPA, Steep- Coffee Stout, and Stairwell- Dry Irish Stout. I have not rated a single beer from them under a 4 out of 5 on any of my visits here, there are very few breweries that I can make that claim about.
But my favorite beer that I have had on my trips to Mothfire is Attacus which is a Munich Dunkel. This beer is a lager that is very crisp with a malty backbone with flavors that include caramel, chocolate, and a slight roastiness that finishes oh so smooth. Thinking about it makes me want to take a trip to Ann Arbor at this very moment. The great news is that it checks in at 5.6% ABV, so you can enjoy a few during your visit. You can even grab cans of it to go, that way you can continue to enjoy it all day long if you would like. Mothfire does offer most of their beers in cans to go from the brewery, check during your visit to see if you can take your favorite home with you.
When you are in Ann Arbor checking out the campus or going to the Big House for a game and you are looking to grab a few tasty beverages, pay a visit to Mothfire Brewing Company and grab some of the best beers that you can get that are brewed within the city limits. Cheers!
