One nice little pit stop before you reach Marquette is Lake Superior Smokehouse Brewpub in Harvey, Michigan. The town of Harvey is located just South of Marquette. The brewery opened in 2019 and has been making quality beer and BBQ for the people of Harvey for the last 5 years.

When it comes to the layout of the brewery, there are seating options aplenty. They have tables scattered throughout the space for dining in and enjoying some beverages. Their bar is a decent sized L-shaped bar that can seat approximately 15 or so people at it. Lake Superior Smokehouse has an outdoor seating area with a bunch of picnic tables and a firepit that people can gather around and enjoy the fresh Upper Peninsula air while enjoying a few beers. The outside area is also dog friendly, so bring your best friend with you during your visit. Are you looking to host a private event in the area? The brewery does have options for private event rentals, reach out to the brewery if you are interested in having your next gathering here. Just a heads up though, if you are planning a trip out this way, the brewery is closed on Mondays.

As the name suggests they are a smokehouse. So what’s on the menu? Why it is a barbecue centric menu, of course. They offer a bevy of smokehouse related appetizers such as BBQ nachos, bacon wrapped jalapenos, and smokehouse mac and cheese. Then the mains include the stalwarts of the BBQ world, pulled pork, brisket, ribs, chicken, andouille sausage. Other dishes on the menu, for those that may not like BBQ include salads, sandwiches and a kids menu. While we were here Crystal and I split a pulled pork sandwich and an order of their fried pickles. Both were absolutely delicious and I would return just for more of their pulled pork. If you are an early morning drinker or had a late night drinking and need to settle your stomach, they also have a full breakfast menu. If breakfast is anything like the pulled pork, I am in.

Lake Superior Smokehouse and Brewpub offers quite a few options other than their own beer. They have a variety of other guest taps, quite a few of them are non-alcoholic beers for those people that are drinking abstinent. They do offer a full bar with a bevy of housemade cocktails and various wine options.

Another thing that is cool about this place is that they do operate a state-of-the-art self-pour draft system in the brewery. This was only the third place I had been to in my years of travels that had one of these implemented. We did not use it, we got our beer the old fashioned way, from a bartender. But it is always cool to see something unique on your travels.

When it comes to the beer, they usually offer about 12 of their beers on tap. Some of the options as I typed this up included Lakewood Lager-Amber, Harvey Haze- NEIPA, Stay A Little Lager- Mexican Lager, Chocolay Night- Dark Ale, and the one beer that we tried that is still on their tap list as of the time that I wrote this review, Superior Munich Dunkel.

A beer that we tried that is not on their tap list as of right now was called Complexity, which is an Altbier. It was a beer with a slight hop bitterness but well balanced by a clean and crisp malt bill. It was slightly spicy, peppery and had some floral characteristics from the hops used. All of this combined for a beer that was smooth and easy drinking with no roasted malt flavor or harshness to it, and it finished very clean. Clocking in at just 5.4% ABV brings about the fact that you could enjoy a few in a sitting, if you feel inclined to do so.

Looking to make a stop and grab some great BBQ and some good beers on your trip through the Upper Peninsula? Make it a point to drop by Harvey and the Lake Superior Smokehouse and Brewpub. I know I will stop by again next time I am in the area. Proost!
