With Tahquamenon Falls in the rearview mirror, we are going to continue to head West through the U.P. towards Grand Marais and Lake Superior Brewing Company otherwise known as Dunes Saloon. They first started brewing beer in 1995, and have been putting out quality beers to Yoopers and tourists alike for almost 3 decades now.
A quick little side note to this visit. I have only been here one time, and it was during Covid, so they were not allowing anyone inside. We had to sit in their outdoor seating area, and there were very high winds (60 MPH+) on this particular day. SInce it is a beach area there was sand blowing everywhere due to the high winds. We had to sit with our hands covering our glasses to try to protect them from sand. Alas every beer we drank ended up looking like a milkshake towards the end because they got so much sand in them, it was unavoidable.
Now when it comes to seating options at the brewery, we already know that they have seating outdoors. This part I am doing just by looking at pictures, because as I said, we were not allowed inside on our visit. They have a smaller bar area that looks to seat about 10 people at it. There are also quite a few tables scattered throughout the place for your drinking and dining needs.
They do offer a kitchen with a full menu. The menu consists of a few appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, salads, pizza and a few BBQ entrees. We ended up getting an appetizer of cheese curds during our visit as a small snack. They were very good, until we were eating more sand than cheese curd.
Since they are a saloon in addition to a brewery, they have a fully stocked bar. They have various liquor options and a cocktail menu, and quite a few wine options. For the non-drinkers in your party they have a few house made craft sodas to enjoy.
When it comes to the beer, their tap list at the time of me typing this includes Hematite Stout, Granite Brown, Steelhead Red IPA, First Fruit American IPA. and Puddingstone Wheat. I know that this is the point where I normally review a beer. But due to the extreme wind conditions and the debris that ended up getting into my beer while we were there, I did not end up rating any of the beers that we tried here. I felt it would be disingenuous to rate beers that were less than ideal due to weather conditions outside. I will have to revisit this place on my next trip to the Upper Peninsula to give their beers a fair shake and fair ratings.
As you are making your way from Tahquamenon Falls towards Marquette, take a little detour into Grand Marais and Lake Superior Brewing Company. Hopefully you don’t end up in a sandstorm drinking milkshakes like we did. Cheers!
