I know that as you have driven North on I-75 towards West Branch you have seen the billboards along your travels for The Highway Brewing Company. Located in Downtown West Branch, they are housed in a restored fire hall from the 1890’s. The Highway opened in 2018 and has been serving up their tasty concoctions to the locals and thirsty travelers from day one.
This is a very spacious brewery with a whole lot of seating for your brewery experience. This is another brewery that has 2 bars, one downstairs that seats approximately 8 to 10 people and another upstairs that seats about 6 or so people at it comfortably. Both the upstairs and downstairs areas have tables for you to sit at with your friends to enjoy a few beers. There are outdoor seating options at the Highway, there is a small outdoor patio area in the back of the brewery, and the upstairs has a bigger outdoor rooftop area for your drinking and dining festivities.
When it comes to events that the brewery hosts, they do offer live music on occasion. Check the brewery’s socials in order to see if any events will be happening during your trip. In the upstairs area, they do have pool tables and various board games for all of your entertainment needs. The Highway does offer their space for private event rentals. Call the brewery to set up your next party in the West Branch area. Just a heads up, The Highway is closed on Tuesdays, so plan your visit keeping that in mind.
I believe the next thing you might be wondering about, does The Highway have a kitchen? The answer is yes they do. Their food options consist of appetizers, salads, wraps, sandwiches, burgers, tacos, main courses and a kids menu. I have had their burgers at The Highway before, and I highly recommend grabbing a delicious burger upon your visit.
If you are visiting with friends that don’t really care for beer, The Highway Brewing Company does offer a fully stocked liquor bar where they make handcrafted cocktails, and various options of different wines. For the non-alcoholic drinks The Highway has a few soda options and non-carbonated beverages.
Here is where we get to talking about the beers, The Highway offers 16 taps of beer at all times. The taps consist of 6 flagship beers and various seasonal and rotational beers. In addition to their own beers, they do have guest taps with beers from other Michigan breweries. Their 6 flagship beers include Chief Ogemaw IPA, Hobo City Milk Stout, Angry Bride Amber Ale, Bituminous- Dark Ale, Highway 55 Wheat Ale, and Knee High Golden Ale. Another beer that seems to be a flagship is their Noon Whistle- Hazy IPA, but their website only claims to have 6, so I’m not sure if the website needs to be updated or if this one is not a flagship.
My favorite out of all the beers that I have tried at The Highway is the Chief Ogemaw IPA. This is a Session IPA that is light-bodied, has a strong citrus presence, is slightly bitter from the hop additions but finishes very smooth. This beer is dry hopped with Cascade and Columbus hops. Checking in at a mere 5.0%, this is a beer that you can have multiple of and not feel guilty about it. But as always, enjoy it responsibly.
On your next trip across the I-75 highway, get off the highway at exit 212 and make a pit stop at The Highway Brewing Company and grab yourself a beer or two and a burger to fuel up to continue your beer journey across the great State of Michigan. Estrovia!
