Another brewery that I like to visit often since it is a little closer to home is Batch Brewing Company in Detroit, Michigan. Batch Brewing Company opened in 2015 and has been serving absolutely stellar beer in a very unique environment from the get go.

Batch has a somewhat interesting story behind how they opened their facility. They first started their attempt at opening the brewery through a crowdfunding campaign where they were able to raise $25,000 to begin the funding. Then in 2013, they won the Hatch Detroit contest, which is a contest where people of Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park vote on business proposals that they would like to see in one of those neighborhoods. The winning business proposal then is awarded a cash amount to help get their business off the ground. Batch won $50,000 the year that they won the contest. That is $75,000 that Batch raised for their business off of 100% pure hustle, and I totally respect that.

I have met the owner Steven Roginson on a few occasions. He has come into the Bearded Lamb several times, our brewer Doug used to work for him and he comes in every so often to check out Doug’s progress. I have also met the general manager Kim, she is another person that knows her stuff, with over 20 years of brewing experience. Both Steven and Kim have a wealth of knowledge about the industry that we work in and have worked very hard to get where they are at in the industry.

Now onto the brewery, Batch has grown into a behemoth of the Corktown neighborhood that they reside in. The bar is a decent sized bar, and has a capacity to seat about 15 or 20 people. There are quite a few tables scattered throughout the indoor area to enjoy a round or two with friends. The outdoor area is really impressive, first they have a smaller patio right outside the brewery with a few tables to enjoy your beers at. Then they have an absolutely massive outdoor biergarten and event space, which has a capacity in the hundreds of people. Dogs are allowed in all outdoor areas.

Batch Brewing Company is home to various events such as trivia night, live musical performances, fundraisers and beer related celebrations throughout the year such as Oktoberfest. Check their socials to see if there are any events going on during your next visit. They do also offer space for private event rentals. Contact the brewery to book your next event in the city of Detroit.

They do have a full kitchen at Batch with food options that include various appetizers, salads, sandwiches, a few pasta dishes and desserts. We have eaten here on a few occasions and the food is always delicious. For the non-beer drinker they have options such as Wine, Seltzer and Cider. For non-alcoholic options they offer canned soda, Mexican Coke, and Citradelic Hop Tonic Water.

Now to the thing Batch Brewing Company is best known for, the beer. I have always thoroughly enjoyed any beer that I have ever had from Batch Brewing Company. Some of my favorites over the years have included Gentle Jack Jones- Brown Ale, Centennial Pils, Son of a Batch- IPA, Bonus Beat- Wheat Beer, Rude Boy Bitter- Session Bitter, Captain Carrol’s Dry Stout, Dying Art- IPA, Altered States- Altbier, and Landmark in the Shadows- Export Stout. As you can see the styles are all over the board here, and they do them all very well. Batch is not the type of place that only specializes in one or two styles, there will always be something unique, interesting and different on Batch’s menu every time you visit.

My favorite beer of all time from Batch, has to go to their Festbier. This beer is everything you want an excellent Festbier to be. It is a light-bodied, semi-sweet beer with a little bit of a nutty flavor, and an excellent malt profile. This Festbier goes down all too easy and oh so smooth, I wish I had one as I type this review up at 8 A.M. Good news, it checks in at 5% ABV, so you can have one at 8 A.M., if you so desire. Or you can drink multiple of them at any time of the day, but always do so responsibly.

Coming up on a decade of serving fantastic beers to the city of Detroit and beyond is no easy task, and Batch Brewing Company has not only done that, but they have excelled at doing it. So Batch Brewing Company we salute you. Prost!
