On the opposite corner of a hardware store in downtown Midland is a self-described “Mom & Pop Shop” of a microbrewery, bakery, and coffee shop. I’m ashamed to admit that, although MI Element Grains & Grounds has been around since 2019, I never knew it existed until I saw it on the Michigan Brewery Map app (which you need to check out, by the way!).

I went for lunch one day to see what it was all about and was impressed with the space. It was huge inside with plenty of seating. A live musician was setting up his keyboard and sound system, a cruise-ship piano player who decided to stick around Michigan once the pandemic hit. I cozied up to the bar for a cranberry-almond scone and beer.

One of the owners, the “Mom” of the shop, let me taste all three of the brews they had on tap. They keep their production small to ensure that only the best is served. All three were solid, but the Off-Suit Ace Spelt Ale stood out.

The ale featured a straw to gold color with just a hint of red in its depths. It was a tad opaque but not hazy. The white, creamy foam was poured expertly and hung around for quite a while. Its nose reminded me of fresh summer fruits. If I had to nail it down to a single word – lemon.

On tasting, I picked up a citrus front with a little bitter hop toward the end. A tartness, reminding me again of lemon, was also picked up on the end. This fired up the sides of my tongue and left my mouth watering for more.

The finish was clean and dry, but that tartness lingered a little afterward. Based on the aroma, appearance, and flavor, I was surprised the brew had a medium body. A Spelt Ale is brewed with, well duh, Spelt, an ancient grain with a unique profile that made this beer stand out and not feel very heavy at all.

I’m glad the Michigan Brewery Map led me to this diamond in the rough. From the tasty food, chill vibes, nice owners, and great beer, I had an enjoyable experience. I look forward to going back to try some of their freshly made sourdough bread and more beer!
