Beer: DRIPA
Style: Double Rice India Pale Ale
ABV: 9.5%
10 Stars

In honor of Better on Draft’s recent visit to Kuhnhenn Brewery I decided to have one of their flagship beers, DRIPA!

DRIPA has a great golden color. It’s like looking at a regal lion’s mane. There are just a few tiny streams of bubbles around the edge to give it some extra dimension. The smell is a sweet, almost caramelly smell. A bit like a cookie you buy at the bakery.

One of the things I love most about DRIPA is it’s interesting flavors. One second you taste a fuzzy bitterness and the next you are whisked away on citrus, almost floral flavor train and have a beautiful, velvety stop at refreshing finish station. It’s not quite a Better on Draft session (only >10% need apply) but at a respectable 9.5% you will be amazed by it’s light and smooth finish (that’s the “rice” in Double Rice IPA, folks). I love the multifaceted taste of this beer because it just blends so well!

I just have to do it. DRIPA gets a 10 from me. It’s everything I love in a beer. It has a deep and complex flavor that feels rich and delicious, a nice balance of sweetness and bitterness where you can taste both but neither is overpowering, and a smooth and satisfying finish. Have I praised it enough? Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a growler in my fridge to drink.

  1. DRIPA is always a winner. The first time I had it was at Summer Beer Fest in Ypsi a few years back. I walked up to Kuhnhenn’s booth, started looking over their list, and the guy behind the booth asked, “have you ever had our DRIPA?” My life was changed that day.

  2. I’ve been missing out. Your description makes it sound like the Platonic Form of beer. Thanks for the heads-up!
