I poured 12 ounces of used motor oil into a glass and drank it. Every drop. Never hesitated for a second.
Seriously this beer does look like motor oil when you pour it into a glass. It’s a deep, dark brown, almost black color with a head that has a serious tan – and leaves a nice tan line around the glass too.
If you read a lot of beer reviews, and I probably read too many, you can get all kinds of descriptions for all kinds of beers. Sometimes you wonder if any two reviewers are drinking the same stuff; once they start with descriptions of taste, aroma, color and all that jazz the adjectives start flying off the table. This is okay really, and it’s a good reason to read more than one review of any beer. Learning a complex and complete bio on a beer is a good way to venture into trying one.
Me, I usually just start with: is it drinkable.
For a beer that pours out as thick and rich as this one does, that immediately reminds you of a porter or a stout, this beer is definitely drinkable. The taste is a little different and it must come from the wood that the barrels are made of, an exotic species from Paraguay. It’s okay though; although a little different the taste is very good, very pleasing. It’s a very rich flavor, that reminds you of fresh leather, a fresh vanilla bean, and fresh bread that’s been toasted just right – you know, toasty but still soft and chewy. There is a decided alcohol smell and taste, but it’s probably difficult to hide 12% ABV which is a number that puts it way up in the heavyweight division. All in all, this is a very smooth, very drinkable beer that lingers a bit after a good swallow and doesn’t disappoint.
Dogfish Head never disappoints and this one keeps their banner high.
