So… Devil Dancer. The 12% ABV triple IPA from Founders. Is it good? Is it bad? Well it might be so good it’s baaaaad. But probably not.

There’s definitely an interesting smell here. It’s surprisingly malty, almost like a barley wine? Don’t worry, there is a waft of pine forest over top. Image a large, peaty field with a large pine forest behind it. The color is serious. A rich brown with a hint of red around the edges. It’s like a fur coat in a glass.

This beer will knock you on your ass, quite frankly. It feels incredibly thick in your mouth. That sounds weird but hear me out. It’s bitter, it’s spicy, there are strong tastes of alcohol, but i can’t stop drinking it. I’m drunk about halfway through but I still need all of it. It has a bit of an oily texture like higher ABV beers tend to have but I’m really enjoying the nice complex flavors. So much malt, so many hops, tickles of citrus and a smack of bitter on the tail.

I think this is a great beer for people who enjoy heavier beers, like stouts and porters, but aren’t the biggest fans of IPAs. There is definitely a bitterness but it’s not nearly as hoppy as you would think a triple IPA would be. The heavier feeling would appeal to high ABV drinkers and it might help them cross over into IPAs.

I am going to rate this a 9. This beer hits a lot of points I love, complex flavor, hoppy, gooey flavor, but it does have a stronger alcohol flavor than I’d like. It’s so drinkable. Definitely recommended. Please enjoy. Responsibly, of course.
