“Give me a few months.” That was what Eric Plata said in January as he was getting settled into his new role as head brewer at Perrin Brewing Co in Comstock Park, MI.

Well, it’s been a few months and beers with Eric’s touch are beginning to roll out, including 2021’s No Rules Vietnamese Porter and two new IPAs – Double Pay and 59-10. With big bold flavors being touted in all three beers, the future looks bright for Eric at Perrin Brewing Co.

A few people may scratch their heads at a beer named 59-10 right off the bat. Loyal fans, mug club members, and anyone who has used Google Maps to get to the brewery know no different. Perrin’s address is 5910 Comstock Park Dr NW, so the beer’s name is a nod to the address. Perrin has been at that location since its inception in 2011. Over the years it has been cemented in the Michigan craft beer culture and scene. According to an announcement email from the brewery, 59-10 “is a traditional IPA with a modern twist – a blend of old-school and new-age hops are perfectly balanced with a sweet malty backbone.”

59-10 crossed our radar at Better on Draft when its label cleared the TTB and we posted it in one of our monthly New Michigan Beer Label posts. To see the beer come to life and be available in a can is exciting as we know that a TTB approved label doesn’t always mean it will become a reality.

Perrin’s new beer is arriving at a time when the American IPA market is very, very crowded. With it being a standard 7% there’s gotta be something that sets it apart from the competition, right? The blend of “old-school” and “new-age” hops being used together is what sets this one apart.

The front end of the beer is packed with hops. The tastes buds go crazy with a mix of pine and citrus all in one. According to Eric, the “old-school” hops are Centennial and Summit and the “new-world” hops are NZ Nelson Sauvin and Sultana. A strong, malty backbone smooths everything out which make this American IPA easy drinking and quick to go down. Seriously, before I knew it my beer was gone.

Not to worry though! Perrin has released 59-10 cans in 6- and 12-packs, on draft, and in their new IPA variety pack, Pack of Perrin. The variety pack includes three IPAs – 59-10, Double Pay, and Low Rise, a low calorie IPA for those of us looking for something lighter or a break from the hops from the other two beers.

59-10 is worth the try! Break away from your old American IPA mainstay and give Perrin’s a try. I think you’ll be surprised and happy with the product just like I was.

Cheers!

Disclaimer: Thank you to Eric Plata for the complimentary cans of 59-10 and Double Pay to consult for this review!

Ed Norton

Edwin "Ed" Norton was first introduced to craft beer when his designated fraternity Big Brother Vince asked him if he knew anything about the topic. Ed admitted his ignorance and the rest is history as Ed and Vince would split six-packs of craft beers each week during Ed's probationary status. Ed is now a craft beer enthusiast who is always on the lookout for a beer he has not tried when bottle shopping or drinking at breweries and bars. In addition to drinking beer, this livelong Michigan resident enjoys a bunch of hobbies that he doubts you really care about, other than drinking beer and sounding off about it.
