The first beer of Pumpkin Beer Palooza is from North Center Brewing Company, one of Better on Draft’s sponsors. To be honest, I think I would be covering this beer no matter what because Kevin and his team in Northville are crafting solid beers.

Their Headless Horseman Pumpkin Pie Ale was a favorite from the Michigan Brewers Guild 2016 Detroit Fall Beer Festival by the writers at the time. They described the beer as “quite delightful.” North Center’s Instagram has been hyping this beer up, so I had to see what it was all about.

One thing I liked about buying cans from North Center is you can mix and match cans from the beer fridge. I’m a fan of pumpkin beers and would have loved to take home a case, but I also saw that North Center released a Black is Beautiful batch, so I was able to mix and match to get a few of each.

The can art for the Headless Horseman is intricate and detailed. The orange lettering,  headless horseman imagery, and dark background help get you in the mood for a pumpkin beer in October. The description of the beer is also listed: “This pumpkin pie ale is mashed in with real pumpkin and spiced with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and vanilla for a flavor that will take your head off.” Solid play on words in my book.

As for the beer, this amber-colored 6.7% beer was, indeed, “quite delightful.” I enjoyed the immense amount of spices throughout each sip as it resembled a spice-filled pumpkin pie. The pumpkin was subtle along with the vanilla. The vanilla smoothed things out and added a touch of sweetness.

This beer is going to be an excellent companion for all things fall. You can grab yourself a can or four-pack or case at North Center Brewing’s taproom in Northville, MI at 410 N. Center Street.

Cheers!

Disclaimer: Ed purchased Headless Horseman Pumpkin Pie Ale for review.

Ed Norton

Edwin "Ed" Norton was first introduced to craft beer when his designated fraternity Big Brother Vince asked him if he knew anything about the topic. Ed admitted his ignorance and the rest is history as Ed and Vince would split six-packs of craft beers each week during Ed's probationary status. Ed is now a craft beer enthusiast who is always on the lookout for a beer he has not tried when bottle shopping or drinking at breweries and bars. In addition to drinking beer, this livelong Michigan resident enjoys a bunch of hobbies that he doubts you really care about, other than drinking beer and sounding off about it.
