Every area has those places. You know the ones I’m talking about: the kind of place that, when you mention its name, everyone says one of two things:

  • “Yes! That place is amazing!”
  • “I’ve heard about them. Is it really as good as I’ve heard?”

For the Tri-City Area, The Maple Grille in Hemlock is that place. They are a farm-to-table grill with amazing meats and veggies. The menu is constantly changing based on what they have in season. In my area, their reputation is untarnished, and the cornbread sticks with fresh maple syrup dipped on them are legendary. On top of all this excellent food, they’re also a microbrewery!

Though I had not been there in a while, I knew their beers were good. Still, I wasn’t sure which to get when I showed up for dinner and brews. They had just released their Oktoberfest, and while I love a good Märzen, I was looking for something different. I asked the server for his recommendation, and he suggested the Krazy Kow Kölsch as one of their more popular beers.

Served in a beer-cleaned glass (a big deal for those who are into craft beer like you and me), the appearance was exactly what I expected from a Kölsch. It was a straw-colored, clear liquid with a perfectly-poured inch of fluffy white head that stared back at me. I could only hope the beer tasted as pure and refreshing as it looked.

The beer did not have much of an aroma off of it, but this was to be expected. Perhaps a tickle of fruit and malt lingered on a deep sniff, but if so, it was not clear.

On tasting, I got a hint of crackers with a bit of sweet malt. I did not pick up on any fruit while drinking, though my wife said she got a little apple on the finish. I noticed a slightly bitter finish, more than I expected from a Kölsch, but nothing overwhelming. On the exhale, there was no change in the flavor profile; it stayed consistent and straightforward, exactly what I was looking for. It had a nice carbonation and light mouthfeel, barely filling me up as I drank it.

If you’re looking for a great meal and solid brews, then The Maple Grille is a place you need to check out. If you go, pair any meal with the light and tasty Krazy Kow Kölsch for an excellent experience.
