With the Third Winter upon us in Michigan as of late, I thought it would be a good idea to drink more Stouts before the warmer weather of Actual Spring stayed put for a while. Firestone Walker Brewing Company, a California-based brewery, put together a delicious Double Milk Stout to for me to enjoy during another variation of Stout Season. Even though I think any season is stout season, I’ve found that it is more socially acceptable to drink stouts when it is cold outside.

The Double Milk Stout was called Kookie Monster and it was a solid offering from Firestone Walker. The can description named it a “double milk stout brewed with vanilla beans, cocoa nibs, and brown sugar.” It weighed in at 8% ABV and was rich and boozy. In terms of tasting notes, the cocoa nibs gave off a roasty chocolate taste, while the vanilla beans smoothed everything out for a soft mouthfeel. The brown sugar was a new layer for me yet it made the beer cookie-like.

Kookie Monster is part of the Propagator Series, which are brewed in the Venice R&D Brewhouse. The brewhouse offers food, merch, Firestone Walker mainstay beers, along with a fun tap list of in-house only brews. The menu looks amazing from the top down. The Propagator Series features Kookie Monster, a Black Rye IPA called Wookie Jack, a West Coast Double IPA called Psychedelic Arcade, and a collaboration beer with Russian River Brewing Company that’s a Keller Pils called STiVO.

If you ever come across Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s Kookie Monster, give it a try! It is a limited release beer, so keep your eyes peeled and your palate prepared. Firestone Walker is an OG in the craft beer scene, starting up in 1996. They have three taprooms in California – Paso Robles, Buellton, and the aforementioned Venice.

Cheers!

Ed Norton

Edwin "Ed" Norton was first introduced to craft beer when his designated fraternity Big Brother Vince asked him if he knew anything about the topic. Ed admitted his ignorance and the rest is history as Ed and Vince would split six-packs of craft beers each week during Ed's probationary status. Ed is now a craft beer enthusiast who is always on the lookout for a beer he has not tried when bottle shopping or drinking at breweries and bars. In addition to drinking beer, this livelong Michigan resident enjoys a bunch of hobbies that he doubts you really care about, other than drinking beer and sounding off about it.
