One of Detroit’s biggest days is right around the corner – Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park!

There are a lot of uncertainties with Opening Day each year. Besides the score and outcome, the weather always plays a factor in the day. Will it be warm and sunny, the ideal weather for Opening Day? Will it be cloudy and cool with a chance of  rain? Will it be winter for the umpteenth time? The weather for Opening Day 2022 is forecasted to be cloudy and rainy with a high in the mid to upper 40s.

Rain or shine, Eastern Market Brewing Co, one mile away from the action at Comerica Park, is stepping up to the plate with their Opening Day IPA. The IPA is decked out in a baseball themed label that is fresh and clean like all of the baseballs around the League along with each team’s record.

The crack of the can sounded just like the first crack of a baseball bat on Opening Day. It was near bliss. The beer poured a yellow straw color with a little bit of head. It resembled a Lager, but was definitely not one. In addition to being fermented cold, this Cold IPA was a lighter take on a typical IPA thanks to the Pilsner Malt. The Citra hops were bitter, but the bitterness was not in your face making this beer approachable and crushable.

Not only has Eastern Market Brewing Co thrown together a celebratory beer they are also hosting a tailgate for Opening Day. They will be opening up at 10 am and featuring this beer on draft in a special release. Marrow will be on hand to grill and create coney-style hotdogs, too.

Despite the cold and rainy weather, EMBC’s Opening Day IPA is one that you need to check out whether you’re heading down to Detroit or taking the day off to watch the game and drink. It is not a “one and done beer.” Opening Day IPA clocks in at 6% ABV, so you will be able to enjoy multiple rounds or cans of this and still remember the game!

Cheers!

Disclaimer: Shout out to the team from Eastern Market Brewing Co for hooking me up with a can of this beer for review.

Ed Norton

Edwin "Ed" Norton was first introduced to craft beer when his designated fraternity Big Brother Vince asked him if he knew anything about the topic. Ed admitted his ignorance and the rest is history as Ed and Vince would split six-packs of craft beers each week during Ed's probationary status. Ed is now a craft beer enthusiast who is always on the lookout for a beer he has not tried when bottle shopping or drinking at breweries and bars. In addition to drinking beer, this livelong Michigan resident enjoys a bunch of hobbies that he doubts you really care about, other than drinking beer and sounding off about it.
