As warmer days become the norm, lighter beers become more and more popular. Wheat Ales, Pales Ales, Pilsners, and Lagers begin to come to the forefront. Add the Golden Lager to that; or at least THIS Golden Lager. Wolverine State Brewing Co.’s “Vers L’avant” is a pretty unique offering. This Golden Lager is brewed with Michigan Bartlett Pear juice and aged in Chardonnay barrels.

When I first read the description, it sounded like there was a bit too much going on here for a Lager and my fear was that it may have been overdone. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The pear is very subtle and the Chardonnay Barrel aging adds just a bit of a bitter finish, but not as dry as I expected. At 5.5% ABV, this is a pleasant beer to have around for the spring/ summer months. I probably wouldn’t have more than on in a single sitting, but it is very good. Cheers!
