As someone that loves both IPAs and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, this Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster from Shorts Brewing didn’t last long on the shelves in either beer store or fridge. From the fabulous name to the retro Space-Invadery label art, once I saw it, I knew I must have it inside of me. Will it live up to the hype as being the “best drink in existence”?!

Poured from the superrad 12oz bottle into a pint glass, Gargle Blaster smells very citrusy… grapefruit, pineapple, orange, along with some spicy Belgium funk and pine. It’s a pleasant dark orange in color with a slight white head.

Gargle Blaster tastes a little bready thanks to the Belgian yeast and the hops bring the happy tropical citrus flair to the party. It’s like someone brought a dish to pass and decided to walk in with a funky, spicy fruit salad in a bread bowl. Madness, you say? Delicious, I say!

On the bitter scale, this one would rate pretty high up there. The hops demolish the mouth like a fleet of Vogon construction ships, especially at the back of the throat. Okay, that may be overstating is a tad, but there are certainly no lack of Galaxy hops in this brew.

Overall, it’s a crisp, dry finish with a medium amount of carbonation. I could (and DID) drink many of these in one sitting. And boy, your head be floating like it’s in the vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly bigness of space after you down a couple of these, because it is strong, coming in at 10.2% ABV.

While it wasn’t quite like “having my brain smashed in by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick”, Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is a very enjoyable brew, and one I would recommend you snag up at your next earliest convenience.
