I was creating my own six pack at the Lager Mill when one beer stood out, all alone. With a wax coated top, Odd Side Ales Lucid Dreams looked like one of those mini bottles of wine. Once I skimmed the bottle for more info it all made sense, “aged in red wine barrels”. What? Every time I turn around a different brewery is peddling a bourbon barreled aged beer but this was the first red wine barrel aged beer I had come across. I had to try it.

It has a nice, one inch head on the pour, with has a deep amber color. As soon as I poured it I could smell the red wine barrels used to barrel age the beer.

The initial taste is warm with little malty flavor and a kick of tart at the end. As I drink it, the 5 months this beer was aged in a red wine barrel really starts to stand out. The dry taste of the merlot with the light malt flavor of a traditional Belgium style beer makes for a full flavored beer.

Don’t worry, at 6.5% ABV, you WILL be left with Lucid Dreams. Cheers!!
