In the summertime when the weather is fine ….

Hot town, summer in the city …..

Too many songs going through my head right now.  Summer can do that to a person, make ‘em want to sing right out …. At least until someone else complains about that awful noise they’re making.  Sorry honey….

Ah, summer.  Beach, BBQ, beer.  Doesn’t get any  better than this.  So I took a break from the Ales and Porters I’ve been drinking lately and grabbed a nice Lager, Lagunitas Pils.  It was perfect for a hot day; I’d been working outside and after a cold glass of water I was ready for something more.  I found a Pils I forgot I had from one of those pick-six shopping foray’s and popped the cap right off.

This beer pours as clear and crisp as a summer’s day.  It’s a perfect golden color with just enough carbonation to see it floating, and when I say clear I mean it’s almost Windex window pane clear.  It’s actually a very pretty – man I can’t believe I used that word to describe a beer – color and transparency, not a hint of cloudiness in the glass or the sky.  Just like a perfect summer’s day.

This beer has just about everything down pat.  The aroma offers up smells of of the malt and the hops, and even a little grain – I honestly thought of a summer day on my grandparents farm.  The head is thick and foamy and coats the side of the glass with a fine, fine lace.  The taste includes all of the above: the grain, almost like a cereal grain, comes through along with a slight taste I can only describe as a bit grassy.  The real delight: Lagunitas added hops in a quantity so spot on, coming in at 35 IBU’s,  perfect you know they’re there and yet they don’t overpower anything else.  It leaves just a hint of bitterness on the tongue as it goes down, but it’s so slight all you taste is the flavor of the beer.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Lagunitas manages beer artistry in a bottle.  I don’t think the Heineken stake has done anything to take away from the brewers ability to create a fine beer.

If you want a refreshing, tasteful, summery brew I’d highly recommend Lagunitas Pils.
