Whenever I see a beer that is named after a dessert, I always want to try it. If it’s a nitro beer, I definitely try it. I’m always cautiously optimistic about a dessert flavored beer. They tend to go really well or horribly wrong. Ballast Point nailed it with this one.

Be mindful of the pour with this beer because it’s a nitro and a bottled beer. You want to follow the instructions on the bottle, “Pour with Purpose”. Turn it totally upside down and pour it quickly.

With the initial pour, the color is golden red but hazy, because of the nitro. As nitro settles into the glass, the real color starts creeping in, a foggy, golden red color. Not as dark or as thick as most stouts.

The smell is sweet but warm. It smells like a warm, red velvet cake.

With the first sip, it has a bit of a bite, it reminds me of the bite you get when you first try dark chocolate. As the beer warms the flavor gets warmer. The chocolate gets more and more noticeable with each sip. It’s a surprisingly light mouthfeel for a stout but it still provides that heavy flavor of a stout beer. You want to sip this beer slowly, savoring every sip like you savor each bite of a red velvet chocolate cake.

The art of the bottle is perfect. A scary skeleton, devouring a meal of life’s guilty pleasures with a red velvet cake to top it off. At 5.5% ABV, Ballast Point Red Velvet leaves you with nothing to feel guilty about.
